About Us

East Gippsland Active Transport Incorporated (EGATI) is working on making East Gippsland a safer place for walkers, motorised mobility device users and bike riders of all abilities and ages.

We advocate for safe, equitable and functional active transport infrastructure in East Gippsland. We are active members of the community that want our community to be safer for all. We also listen to what our fellow community members want and advocate on their behalf.

We are working with council and VicRoads on education and infrastructure and were awarded a VicRoads Community Road Safety grant to run a series of workshops across East Gippsland. We have run workshops focussing on Motorised Mobility Devices, Walking with Care, Safe Return to Bike Riding for Adults and Bicycle Maintenance in Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Orbost, Bruthen, Lakes Entrance and Buchan.

We are planning to continue Adult Bike Education and Bike Maintenance workshops in the coming months as well as some Bike Challenge workshops for children and a community “Ride Bairnsdale to Paynesville” day. Dates and locations will be advertised here and also on our Facebook page.

EGATI is also promoting the installation of safe crossings of major roads, maintenance and extension of existing trails and continuing the push for a safe trail from Bairnsdale to Paynesville.

In Bairnsdale there are quite a few excellent trails, the latest put in by Vic Roads is the one going from the RSL to Harnham Drive up the middle of the highway. The network of existing trails would be enormously improved if some small connections between them were made. In the accompanying photo you’ll see a group enjoying the wonderful path along Eastwood Rd in Bairnsdale, walking, riding and on mobility scooters. Across the road you can see another trail, in Brookfield Estate, but there is no connection between them suitable for bikes or mobility scooters.
